Lost Grove Township

Lost Grove Township Centennial Book, 1869-1969

This book contains information on Lost Grove Township, which is located in Webster County, Iowa, about 80 miles northwest of Des Moines. The township is named after a hill on the eastern side topped by a grove of trees. This grove was said to have been a landmark for both the Indians and the early settlers when finding their way across the prairie (Lost Grove Township, Webster County, 1869-1969, Centennial Book, pp. 3, 6).

The township consisted mainly of farmland, and the towns of Harcourt and Lanyon. Lanyon was where Frank Lindgren and Amy Johnson married, bought their farm and raised their eight children in the early 1900s. The farm later belonged to oldest son Gilmore Lindgren and his family.

In the early days, the area was a tight-knit community, in which many residents were Swedish immigrants or were one or two generations removed. Lost Grove Township was legally organized in 1869. One hundred years later, in 1969, the township commissioned a “Centennial Book,” an informal spiral-bound 8 x 11 booklet of 177 pages, with stories, histories and photographs contributed by many local residents, including members of the extended Lindgren-Johnson family. This page/post provides access to that book.

Linnae Coss has had the book photographed page by page and assembled into a PDF document that is a wonderful resource. We currently have the large document uploaded to a service called DropBox which is supported by Jay Lindgren. Using the link below, you will be able to view the book’s content.
