James Austin Coss, Jr.

James Austin Coss, Jr. born February 11, 1916 to James A. Coss, Sr. and Cora May Jones Coss in Sioux City, Iowa.

1939 – Graduated from Rush Medical School, Chicago.

Met Ruth Lindgren while working the night shift as front-desk clerk at the YWCA where she was living. Worked during the day at the Chicago stockyards to work his way through medical school. Caught TB in medical school, sent to a sanitarium in Iowa for one year. Stopped smoking.

12/18/42 – Married Ruth Lindgren in Chicago at a justice of the peace office, Aunt Irene attending. Honeymoon at Starved Rock Lodge in Illinois.

July 43-44 – Internship, Dallas, Texas
10/11/43 – Linnae born
July 44 – Moved to NYC apartment near Medical Center
July 44 – Began residency in internal medicine at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center
6/29/45 – Carolyn (“Taffy”) born
4/22/47 – Bill born
Spring 47 – Took train to Detroit to pick up 1946 Ford 4-door sedan obtained through Dick Dickerson, Gene’s husband.

May or June 47 – Drove to Washington, D.C. with Taffy for a short trip, probably left Bill and Linnae with Jim’s sister Catherine who lived next door.
June 47 – Drove to Sioux City IA with three children
July 47 – Drove to Fort Dodge for Frank and Amy Lindgren’s 45th wedding anniversary

1949 – Moved to Tenafly, New Jersey. 1950 – Jon born.

1962 – Moved to Montague, New Jersey.

Retired from medicine in the 1970s.

Died – November 16, 1984 in Winter Haven, Florida.
